CHAPTER FOUR

The Guardians: One Chipmunk and Five Large Bees

In 2003 I traveled to my friend Julie’s home to help her when she first moved into a new trailer that was built to accommodate her wheelchair. Julie and I enjoyed a warm relationship. Julie was Ojibway and one of my spiritual mentors. She had residue effects of childhood Polio.

I wanted to help her unpack her library by organizing and shelving her books. While I was there, she taught me through a powerful experience. While I stayed with her to help, she said to me, “I want you to go outside, walk down the road…” Now Julie’s home is in the wilderness. The road is nothing but a dirt road with no cars on it. I don’t remember seeing any neighbors while I was there.

Julie said to me, “You’re going to get to some property just down the road a little bit. You’ll know when you get there. When you do, I want you to go onto the property and to walk it. Now on this property, you are going to see the ruins of a house that used to be there and you’ll know that you are in the right place. Just walk. When you finish, come back and we’ll talk about it.”

I said, “Okay, sure, I can do that.”

Walking down the steps of the trailer, I turned left out of the area where her trailer was parked and walked down the dirt road. I came to the place that matched the description she gave me. As I turned to walk onto the described land, I removed my foot from the dirt road and placed it onto the grassy area.

Suddenly, I heard all this racket in the bush to my right. I looked over and directly at eye level there was a little chipmunk. He was squawking away. I never heard or saw a chipmunk do this. He was sort of chirping and making an entire ruckus; so I stopped and said, “Hello, little brother. Are you the guardian? Are you the gatekeeper? You must be. I promise. I come to do no harm. I just want to walk and see this beautiful land; that’s all I want to do.”

He wasn’t buying any of that. He just kept going on, and going on. He caused quite a tirade. Every time I would take another step, he would start all over again. I would stop and I would talk to him. “Little brother, it’s okay. I come meaning no harm. I promise. I won’t do anything. I won’t touch anything. I’ll just walk.”

I took a few more steps. As I did, all of a sudden, these huge bumble bees, really large bees, started bombarding me, aiming at my head. There must have been three, four, five of them and I thought, “Oh my gosh, now what?” I didn’t know much about bees. I was a bit intimidated by their size, and I questioned their intentions. They reminded me of carpenter bees, and I wondered if these big bumble bees would sting me.
